Monstera Deliciosa Care Guide for Indian Homes
Monstera deliciosa needs bright, indirect light, watering only when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry, a loose, well-draining potting mix and a moss pole or stake to climb. Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering; brown, crispy edges usually mean dry air or too much direct sun.
Light
Place it near a bright window that does not get harsh afternoon sun, such as an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west window. Too little light gives small leaves without splits; strong direct summer sun scorches the leaves.
Watering through the Indian seasons
- Summer (April-June): check the soil every 3-4 days; water when the top 2-3 cm is dry.
- Monsoon (July-September): humidity is high, so water less often.
- Winter (December-February): growth slows; water about once in 7-10 days.
Always water until it drains from the bottom, and empty the saucer.
Potting mix and pot
Use a chunky, airy mix, for example one part garden soil, one part cocopeat and one part vermicompost, with a handful of perlite or coarse sand. The pot must have a drainage hole. Repot every 1-2 years in spring, one size bigger.
Support, feeding and cleaning
Monstera is a climber. A moss pole or bamboo stake helps it grow upright and produce bigger, more split leaves. Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser or a thin layer of vermicompost once a month from March to September. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Common problems and fixes
- Yellow lower leaves: overwatering or poor drainage. Let the soil dry and check the drainage hole.
- Brown, crispy edges: dry air or too much sun. Move away from direct sun and AC drafts.
- No splits in new leaves: not enough light, or the plant is still young.
- Drooping: usually very dry soil; water thoroughly.
Pet safety
Monstera contains calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate the mouth and stomach of cats, dogs and small children if chewed. Keep it out of their reach.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I water a Monstera in India?
When the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry: roughly every 3-4 days in summer and every 7-10 days in winter, depending on light and pot size.
Why are my Monstera leaves not splitting?
Usually because of low light or because the plant is young. Move it to brighter indirect light and give it a pole to climb.
Is Monstera safe for pets?
No. It is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, so keep it out of reach.
