How to Protect Plants in Uttar Pradesh Summers

By the Rajput Farms team · Updated · 2 min read

Quick answer

In UP summers, water plants early in the morning (and again in the evening for pots if needed), mulch the soil, move pots out of the afternoon sun or use a 50% green shade net, and avoid fertilising and repotting during the hottest weeks of May and June. Heat-tolerant plants such as bougainvillea, tecoma, duranta, neem and conocarpus need the least protection.

Water at the right time

Water before 9 AM so plants have moisture for the hot afternoon. Pots and grow bags on terraces may also need water after sunset. Avoid watering in the midday sun; most of it evaporates and splashing cold water on hot leaves can stress them.

Mulch and shade

  • Cover the soil with 3-5 cm of dry leaves, straw or cocopeat to keep roots cool and cut evaporation.
  • Use a 50% green shade net over terrace gardens from late April to June.
  • Group pots together so they shade each other, and keep them off hot concrete using bricks or a stand.

Pots and placement

Terracotta pots stay cooler than black plastic. Move sensitive plants such as indoor foliage plants, young saplings and roses to a spot that gets only morning sun.

What not to do in peak heat

  • Do not repot or plant new saplings in May and June; wait for the monsoon.
  • Do not apply chemical fertiliser to heat-stressed plants; a little vermicompost is fine.
  • Do not prune heavily; leaves shade the stems.

Plants that handle UP heat well

Bougainvillea, tecoma (yellow bells), duranta, conocarpus, neem, desi rose with afternoon shade, and jasmine (mogra) cope well with heat once established. Mogra in particular flowers through the summer.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water plants in summer?

Garden plants: every 2-3 days, deeply. Pots on a sunny terrace: usually every day, sometimes morning and evening. Always check the soil first.

Is it okay to water plants at night?

Evening watering just after sunset is fine in summer. Avoid wetting leaves late at night in humid weather to prevent fungus.

Which flowering plant blooms in peak summer?

Bougainvillea, tecoma, mogra (jasmine) and madhumalti all flower well in hot weather.
